The "hard date" transition from analog television broadcasts to all-digital television broadcasts is Feb. 17, 2009. After this date, analog signals will no longer be broadcast. This mandate was set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It affects over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts in the United States. Digital Television (DTV) delivers sharper pictures and better sound than traditional analog TV. The move to digital will free valuable analog radio spectrum space, some of which will be allocated for wireless companies and first responders to emergencies including fire and police departments.

The measure also would allocate up to $1.5 billion to help consumers with older, analog TV sets subsidize some of the cost to purchase digital-to-analog (D/A) converter boxes so they would continue to get service in the digital era. The cost of the boxes is expected to be at least $50. If you are one of the millions of customers who rely on free, over-the-air TV, you'll need the converter box to keep receiving television service after the switch to all-digital. Cable and satellite customers will not be affected. Need a gift idea for the Home Theater Enthusiast that has everything?

The agency responsible for overseeing distribution of the converter boxes is the Nat'l Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The NTIA has issued a coupon program to subsidize part of the cost of the D/A converter box that some customers may need. Every household will be eligible to receive two $40 coupons that can be used to purchase 2 converter boxes. The coupons must be requested between Jan. 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009. Some viewers may not need or want converters, such as those who have digital TVs or cable/satellite service. So far, LG Electronics, RCA and Samsung, have announced plans to market set-top digital-to-analog TV converters that will be eligible for the coupon subsidy program. Q: What is a Pre-Amp?

A: It amplifies a weak over-the-air (OTA) television signal through increased gain. It is mounted outside on your antenna mast to be near the strongest signal point.

If you are receiving a weak signal or have drop-out due to multiple splitters or a long cable run, you may need a pre-amp to boost the signal strength and minimize disruptions.

If you cannot pickup the signal at all, a pre-amp will not help. Also, if the over-the-air television signal is already strong, a pre-amp may add noise and degrade the picture.
