No, this is not an article about submarines, but rather an article about subwoofers.
A subwoofer is a type of speaker designed for the reproduction of bass frequencies, typically from between 20 Hz and 120 Hz.
Subwoofers use drivers (i.e. woofers) that are generally between 8" and 15" in diameter, but can be much larger.
Surround sound formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS are commonly used in the home theater environment to reproduce the deep bass of a movie and send the low frequencies to a subwoofer.
There are 2 types of subwoofers, Passive and Powered. Passive subs are powered by an external amp, as are the other speakers in your surround sound setup. Active or Powered speakers overcome the limitations of underpowered amps, by containing a matched internal amp, thereby taking the power load away from the amp in your receiver. |

LFE is an abbreviation for the Low Frequency Effects channel. The signal ranges from 20 Hz to 120 Hz, and is normally sent to a subwoofer.
However, the LFE channel is not a subwoofer channel and is a separate, discrete path for loud bass that would overload the main channels.
The LFE channel is typically played back 10 dB higher than the main channels, giving significantly more recording headroom. A Dolby processor will provide this level of offset for you automatically,
In most home theaters, the subwoofer(s) will play the bass from both the main channels and the LFE track. |

Q: What does the ".1" mean when you see an audio system listed as 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, etc.?
A: These numbers are used to describe the number of audio channels in a surround sound system.
5.1 channel is currently the most common format and it means that there are 5 speakers plus 1 subwoofer (the .1). The 5 speakers are the front right, front left, center channel and the 2 rear or side surround speakers.
