New Medium Enterprises (NME) has launched its HD VMD Multiplayer Player in India. It's a direct competitor to Blu-Ray and HD DVD. HD-VMD: Versatile Multilayer Disc was formed by a merger with the Chinese High-Def format, EVD. Red Laser: Unlike its HD counterparts, HD VMD does not use a blue laser, but instead utilizes a red laser similar to that in standard definition DVD players. This will keep HD VMD production costs lower than Blu-Ray or HD DVD. Compression: Red laser formats rely on high-level compression to squeeze high-def movies onto standard 5 GB and 9 GB discs. Eros: The Bollywood film distributor will supply HD VMD titles in India. Apocalypto is one of the high-profile films that ill be released in HD VMD and distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Icon Film Distribution. Anthem Pictures has signed a deal to be the first movie producer to release movies in the U.S. on the HD VMD format. |

Microsoft's Windows Media Video/HD: WMV/HD encoded discs also utilize red laser based DVD players. CH-DVD: Chinese High Definition DVD is based on HD DVD and is supported by the Chinese government. Launch: CH-DVD is expected to make its debut launch in 2008. The format will be promoted by the Chinese High Definition DVD Industry Forum (CHDA) with the help of the HD DVD backed DVD Forum. |

The Transformers has set a record as the fastest selling DVD and HD DVD this year! DVD: Paramount Home Entertainment said that the October 16th release sold 4.5 million DVD copies on its first day and 8.3 million copies during its first week making it the top seller for 2007. Transformers HD DVD: Paramount said that the HD DVD release sold more than 100,000 copies on its first day and was predicted to sell 190,000 copies in its first week of release. 300: Warner Home Video's 300, was the previous number one High-Def title with 250,000 copies sold in its first week, but that total included both Blu-Ray and HD DVD. October Record: The Transformers DVD is also the top selling title for the month of October in the history of the home entertainment industry. Spidey 3: All eyes will be on the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment release of Spider-Man 3 on October 30th, to see if it will break The Transformers record sales. |
