Sanyo: Develops a new Blue Laser that can read and write Blu-ray data, up to 4 layers at speeds of up to 12x (double current 6x speeds) with 25GB per layer for 100 GB of storage per disc (double current 50 GB storage on 2 layers). Panasonic: Has agreed to acquire a controlling interest in Sanyo with plans to make the acquisition a subsidiary. JVC: Reached an agreement with Sensio Technologies to offer high-end 3D TV displays. Circuit City: Filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 10th and is closing 155 stores (1/5th its base) & will exit from 12 markets in an effort to save cash. Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego grabs 47 million shares of Circuit City stock for a 28% stake in the company, compared to Mark Wattles 6.5% stake in the company. Tweeter: Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, and sells distribution center inventory to a liquidator. Netflix: To offer its Internet Movie Streaming capability to a forthcoming LG Blu-ray Disc Player, the BD300, and as a firmware upgrade to the Samsung BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray Disc players. Warner Home Video: The Dark Knight will set a new record and ship 1 million Blu-ray Discs to retailers. YouTube: Announced it will show full-length TV shows and Films from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) archives. |
