AFI: On July 19th, the American Film Institute 37th Life Achievement Award went to Michael Douglas. Apple: Updates Apple TV 2.4 and Remote 1.3 with new Control button, Flickr search, and view by Movie/Genre/Unwatched. Bang & Olufsen: Demos 103-inch Plasma HDTV weighing in at 584 pounds and is available in 5 colors (appox. $93k). Cablevision: Wins legal battle to offer remote-DVR option with movies stored on hard drives at the Cable TV Company. LG: Now shipping HDTVs with THX display certification and built-in Netflix streaming. Macrovision: Changes its name to Rovi. Mitsubishi: From July 16 to Aug. 10th, purchase a select Mitsubishi TV and get a Vudu HD set-top box for free, along with $50 in movie credits. Sony: Offering hundreds of DVDs for less than $10 and discounted Blu-ray Discs. Both include coupons and points to use at MovieStaycation.com (ends Sept. 30th). Vudu: Signs deal to offer the Vudu library of 14,000 movies and TV titles to Encore set-top box subscribers. Yahoo: Releases Twitter TV Widget. |

Futuresource: Predicts Blu-ray software sales will make up 50% of the home entertainment market by 2012. Sony: Announces the BDP-CX960 and BDP-CX7000ES Blu-ray Disc MegaChangers for 400 discs. A new single-disc BDP-S1000ES will feature WiFi. Shipping in August. Universal: Releases a free iPhone app that downloads some bonus features from the disc and remote controls some Blu-ray features. Watchmen: The recent Blu-ray Disc release featured a BD-Live stream from the San-Diego Comic-Con with director, Zack Snyder providing a live commentary. |

Q: What is BD-Live? A: Profile 2.0 compliant Blu-ray Disc players support BD-Live and have at least 1 GB of local storage, and include an internet connection, such as Ethernet or WiFi. BD-Live is a Java scripted language and its features are embedded into some of the latest Blu-ray Disc movies. The BD-Live features provide additional interactive content, such as games, puzzles, exclusive downloads, live chats, live videos, and other bonus material. The features are accessed via the internet and the disc will typically take you to the studio's Web portal for the movie. |
